toscas_kiss: Tosca's Kiss Steampunk Kiss (My fandom will kill your fandom-mayatawi)

When fanfiction is miles better than life art anime...

I've just finished rewatching Weiß Kreuz Kapital for my Crawford/Schuldig [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto essay.

Eeeee.

I'd forgotten just how snortingly awful the subtitle translations for my version are. Not that I believe the dialogue is any better or less clichéd in Japanese, but sometimes the sheer Babel-Fishiness of it is mindboggling.

And the sheer stupidity shortsightedness of most of the characters - mentally, emotionally and logically - also never ceases to astound me. Though I guess without Angst (emphasis on the capital 'A') there couldn't be Weiß.

The plots? I'm not going to touch those with a six-foot naginata. Bad, bad, bad, bad, just plain bad. And Brain Damage fairly comprehensively covers everything anyone can possibly say about the 'quality' of the animation.

[ducks projectiles]

But I love it! you know I do!

Gratuitous and violent slaying of innocents, silly weapons, Wierd Science projects, truckloads of sexy bishounen assassins - both bad and good er, not-quite-so-bad. And those are just the beginning good points. How could anyone not love it?

[wanders off to write about synergy between sociopaths... ]

It is So. Bad.

Every time I try to re-watch it I am reminded of the fact that it gains from horrible Engrish subtitles, because the legit DVDs? They try so darn hard to make it make sense, and it's just not possible at all. Ever.

On the other hand, Weiss gives us synergy between sociopaths, and that's more than enough to make me forgive the horrifying animation. At least until next time I start to watch it and claw my eyes out in horror. ;)

It gains a lot from the bloopers and jokes for the dubbing (from, er, some site I can't remember):

Crawford: *berates Nagi about not screwing up plot to eleiminate Schreient*
Nagi *thinks*: But I don't want that girl to die! . . . *perves* She's such a hottie!

Yohji: *poses against wall* God, I'm so sexy.

Eszett elder: Why are you doing this? I'll give you all positions of power when we come into our kingdom!
Crawford: Kingdom? Ehehe. We don't need no steenking keengdom!

Mmm, the bloopers and jokes from the dubbing are very funny. I think the american actors had much more perspective on the whole "this is CRAZYTIME!" aspect of Weiss than the Japanese ones did.

Also, your icon is so cute!

Yay!

Have a look at the music videos as well, they're hugely impressive. Carnivale 2000 is a remake of the Weiss/Schwarz battle with Schwarz kicking ass in a most (un)righteous way - although you'll shriek at the end.

If you can ever explain what Schuldig's doing in another one, playing with Aya's hair while Aya-chan looks on in a drugged out state, I'll be most grateful.

Yep. Definitely. I'd read so much fanfiction and not seen it for so long it was all somewhat of an ambush...

The sharp edges and bad cel-art all fade into the blurry pretty manga drawings, and we forget that the show itself doesn't quite look like that. What I find incredible is how well I can blind myself to the changes in Gluhen, until re-watching, that is.

It's kind of sad how excited I am about seeing your essay. I like reading ship manifestos a little too much, I think.

*is still very very eager to read it*

I'm exactly in the same state. Just finished rewatching and now I'm weaving through Gluhen.

It was so bad! I had forgotten how ludicrous some scenes were, like the club dance of Ouka and Omi. I was embarrassed on the character's behalf. And ah... the hideous animation!

And now, imagine if the idea of mpreg had ever corssed the animators' minds . . .

My work here is done. Wait, it's not: Crawford calling Schuldig "angel" in Engrish!

You've been taking torture lessons from Schuldig again, haven't you?

Is it terribly wrong that I actually wish I could see what the animators would do with mpreg? Because you know it would reach awe-inspiring levels of badness. Ohh, yeah.
