From Doctoring to Hobbiting...
Oct. 22nd, 2010 12:32 pmCute Scruffy Blonde of the Moment, Martin Freeman (known to us all as Dr Watson in BBC's recent Sherlock), has been cast in the role of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's two-parter films of Tolkein's "The Hobbit".
Of course, first they have to decid a country to shoot it in...

Florence and the Machine - Dog Days Are Over
For several reasons, this music video looks to me like the bastard lovechild of Highlander (the Methos/Death on a Pale Horse years), Star Trek TOS, andany number of insane Japanese GirlPower! Anime Kabuki Theatre...
In a good way, that is.

Hidden Europe
Oct. 21st, 2010 01:43 pmThose of you writing Hetalia, or really, just anyone who wants to know about the less publicised but interesting parts of Europe may find this site well worth viewing:
Hidden Europe newsletter archive.
The company produce a thrice-yearly magazine, somewhat unsurprisingly called Hidden Europe, which is "a publication that showcases excellent travel writing, featuring the offbeat, the eclectic and the everyday that make Europe so special."
The newsletter archive doesn't allow you to read every single article (for obvious reasons) but has enough content and photography to keep you informed and entertained.

Rammstein in America
Sep. 29th, 2010 11:00 amYep, ten years after their last concert in the US, Rammstein are finally returning to the U.S.
They'll be blasting Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday, December 11th.
For those interested (and who can afford to attend), pre-sale tickets are available from 8th October. For everyone else in the vicinity - to paraphrase another NZer's comment on them - I suggest you 'flee into your barn and bolt your doors'!

Public Service Announcement re ESTA
Aug. 11th, 2010 10:28 amSurprise, surprise, but the US Govt has just announced that from 8th Sept 2010, the currently free and mandatory ESTA, aka Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, which all Visa Waiver holders (e.g. British, Europeans, New Zealanders, Australians, etc etc) have to complete before entering the US, will cost $14. If you don't have one of these, Immigration will send you home (without any supper).
The ESTA last two years however, so if you have a planned trip to the US (or even if you don't, really), then fill in the form now. Even if you don't need it for another year and a half, it saves you ten quid. If, like me, you already have a current one (mine had about a year left on it), then apply for a new one. As I visit the US 1-2 times a year, it's worth the five minutes out of my life.
You need to know your passport number (as well as the normal personal details) when you fill in the form, which you can find here.
Grokked from Martin's Money Tips.

Dear London Commuters;
Aug. 10th, 2010 07:01 pmBut especially Moronic Tourists at Paddington Station,
It is Rush Hour.
Whereas you are on holiday and having a relaxing time (though perhaps not in relation to the British Transport system), we have just spent a tiring 7 to 8 hours doing mindnumbing paperwork. We're tired, hungry and just want to get through the 1 to 2 hour journey home as easily and with as little interaction with other people as humanly possible. When you walk down the wrong side despite the fact it is obviously the wrong side, stop and gawk in a really stupid place or just plain meander, don't be suprised when half a dozen Londoners run you over or give you dirty looks.
And no, sorry to inconvenience you but
a) two solid objects cannot, in actual fact, occupy the same space at the same time, and
b) instant teleportation is not one of my super powers.
No Love,
Tosca

Kicking the block
Jun. 24th, 2010 07:03 pmSqueefest is in a month - I'm looking forward to it greatly. There's usually lots of great writing inspiration. My writing muscles are somewhat atrophied however, so to get back into the groove I'm taking prompts to scrawl a sentencefic, drabble or ficlet.
Any fandom with optional character/pairing (from my Interests), and a prompt.

So ThinkGeek ran a very entertaining April Fools Day gag this year - selling Canned Unicorn Meat; sparkly, tasty, canned unicorn spam in a can;
"Pâté is passé. Unicorn - the new white meat. "
Mmmmmmmm.
To compound the entertainment value however, they have just now received a 12 page long Cease & Desist legal order from the National Pork Board, who claims ThinkGeek's product is infringing on their slogan "The Other White Meat". Well, I imagine there were red faces all 'round when it was explained it was a joke!
Check out the full amusing details here.
P.S. ThinkGeek are also offering a special discount for a limited time - take $10 off any order of $40 or more by using the code PORKBOARD at checkout.

Down to the Earth
Apr. 22nd, 2010 07:56 pmHappy Earth Day to all of you and the Planet Earth!
My personal piece of education today was to watch a 2008 TED: Ideas Worth Spreading video of oceanographer Robert Ballard talking about exploring Earth's underwater world; the amazing things they've found (often simply by accident) and how it's merely the tip of the iceberg.
After viewing that, I can't help but think that instead of pinning our hopes on technologies and advances made through exploring and colonising other worlds, the best hope for a future viable Earth is a landscape a lot closer and one largely ignored.
Watch the video - it's amazing:

Apr. 21st, 2010 08:35 pmFree Lonely Planet app alert!
Sadly useful only for those of you who own an iPhone, but those lovely people at Lonely Planet are giving away City Guides for a dozen of Europe's most popular cities - London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, etc as a relief effort for all those stranded by the ashy billowing of Eyjafjallajökull.
So fire up the App Store and download a guide for a future holiday - or to learn some unknown interesting places around town
(sadly the town I really wanted - Prague - isn't included. Pish!).
