My generation were too young for Woodstock (I would've been 8!). Oh no, we had the 1970s and the Bay City Rollers, with Punk Rock at the end of the decade. It was followed by the 1980s and some really good electro pop ... By the 1990s, I started to lose the plot :) Yes, I'm *really* old!
The Evolution of Metal series recently had an episode on '90s grunge (Can it be seen as part of metal's family tree?). Holy crap, if I knew what pretentious asshats so many people in these bands were back in the day, I might never had bothered to listen to them. *g*
Yes, I am old!
I remember some folks going to the '90s Woodstock coming in to order food when I worked cashier at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania.
I think that goes for the majority of stars! Though looking back, it's often the ones 'rebelling against The Man' who makes us cringe hardest. Probably cos I am The Man now. [snorfle] Heh. Bet there wasn't as much weed at that one!
It was an hour of hearing music that obviously had roots in metal as well as punk well really pretentious musicians admitted to listening to and being inspired by Leppelin and Sabbath, among others, while saying their music had nothing to do with metal (because punk is more rebellious). I spent a lot of that episode wanting to punch the Melvins. Also, the Seattle bands were totally original and everyone afterward ripped them off! Also, Eddie Vedder is the only person who sang his way and the only one allowed to sound anything like that without being accused of ripping Vedder off.
A member of Creed, of all things, had to point out that another frontman had a very similar singing style and came out about the same time as Pearl Jam, and the band that frontman belonged to was Hootie and the Blowfish. This episode of The Evolution of Metal made me agree with Creed!
I'm so glad I didn't go to the 90s Woodstock. Things became very very dangerous there mostly from various companies and organizers planning things badly, doing their best to rip concertgoers off on food and beverages, not providing enough porti-sans and water and ATMs, and then after all this horror in horrific heat handing dehydrated, filthy, pissed off people candles. It was messed up.
Pearl Jam sold out within minutes of the MEN Arena tickets going on sale.
XKCD had a strip pointing out that Moon Landing -> Little Mermaid (IIRC) is a smaller gap than Little Mermaid -> Today. *That* makes me feel old. Also, that I could have children the same age as several of my fandom friends.
