I have zero sympathy for dole bludgers, but it seems to me that:

New Universal Benefit (supposedly guaranteeing you will always be better off in work than on the dole; and penalising those who can work but refuse what they're offered)

not at all, I think you're absolutely right, and there's plenty of Science to prove it.

I don't understand who all these 'workshy' people are, anyway. I have half a dozen well trained, well qualified friends at the moment who are fit, able and looking for work - any work at all - but can't get hired. They aren't 'offered' anything! There are no jobs!

As always, the government could reap far more income by tightening up tax legistlation than from pursuing the unemployed. But that's never gonna happen...

People have forgotten that one of the functions of welfare is to prevent revolutions. I also know people who are well qualified and aren't getting any offers. I know very few true "workshy" people.

In the US, the poor, unemployed and immigrants are getting the blame for the bad economy. Oh, no, it has nothing to do with 2 unfunded wars, the fact that discretionary spending makes up 70% of our GDP, and outsourcing every single job to China or India.

I agree with you....

I think they've forgotten that some times, you just aren't offered any jobs, even though you're qualified or you have enough transferable skills or whatever.
