Yup - she "proved", using "modern-day forensic science" that Jack was in fact Walter Sickert. I picked the book (Portrait of a Killer) up for nothing while I was working in the RSPCA charity shop, read it, and gave it straight back; From Hell was much more believable, a better read, and was Alan Moore :)
I liked the Scarpetta books up to about The Body Farm - once she turned Lucy into A Cause they started to annoy me.
Could I take the opportunity to pimp my favourite recent discovery? Manda Scott - she wrote a few (very good) crime novels, starting with "Hens' Teeth" and "Nightmares", and then branched out into historical fiction. Namely Boudica. I sympathise with whichever character she's focussing on at a particular time, and it feeds my Roman Legionary lust :)
And there are honest-to-goodness, there-on-the-page, legionary / slave boy plotlines :D
