I felt like a lone explorer traversing some icy beach on a dead, unpeopled world. The sky was edged in peach, pearlizing upward into a dome of palest blue-grey. The puffing little cumuli of my breath were the only movement together with the seagulls wheeling overhead; their cries mournful and lonely, the crunch of my boots in the snow sounding like breaking seashells underfoot. Rows of cars were abandoned mechanical corpses laid out under a layer of white. The possibility of a frozen sea, an endless expanse still and forever immobile, lay just beyond eyesight. The snow hid a thin membrane of ice and I picked my way slowly and cautiously down the strand, hindered by poor traction and uneven pavements; caught between the unmoving serenity of the scene and the treacherousness of movement.

Robin Cook had some intelligent things to say about it in The Independant (though no internet page for his letter unfortunately, only for the main article), but it's still a week I feel like spitting on most politicians.
Can we get back to the fact they haven't found any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq yet?
