Hoorah! Saiyuki Reload 2 arrived at work this morning. I can't wait to curl up on the couch with a hot cup of tea and read it. The Younger Sibling will just have to amuse herself for an hour or so.

To celebrate our upcoming birthday, aforesaid YS took me to Simply Simpsons last night for dinner. This is one of London's best 'good British' restaurants, serving traditional foods with style. You have to love a place that wheels the roast Scottish beef up on a trolley and carves it in front of you. Needless to say, it was delicious, as was the freshly grated horseradish, roast potatoes and buttered spinach. My chicken terrine entree was also divine - melt in your mouth with a wonderful silky texture.
Simply Simpsons is actually 3 venues in one building, Simpsons, which are part of the Savoy group. We had a champagne cocktail in the Knight's Bar (so-called as it's a hangout for chess groupies) beforehand, sinking into the deep lushly leather armchairs. Mmmm. There's a slightly posher silver service restaurant downstairs, The Grand Divan - which I've been to once - that's a monument to Arts and Crafts Movement public interior decorating, all dark wood and William Morrisdom. The restaurant we were in is slightly more classical, all big mirrors, fancy edging and pink panelling. It doesn't have quite the same amount of gilt as the Ritz dining room does (which we also went to as a birthday treat a couple of years ago), but then I think that would be a physical impossibility.

The plan for tomorrow is Camden Markets, then London Zoo.
The Younger Sibling was less than impressed however, when I suggested she attend the zoo's Friendly Spider program, an afternoon course "carefully designed to ease or eliminate the condition of arachnophobia through a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy". She's perfectly happy to stay in a state of terror regarding the little beasties - after all, all she has to do is scream and get Grant or I to chase them away.
